The Beginning of Something Else

On June 1, 2007 I found out my husband and partner of almost two decades had been unfaithful to me since before our marriage, and had been having intercourse with prostitutes for 3 1/2 years. This is what happened next.

It's the online edition, but that's a start.

That was an interesting article. The sentence that jumped out at me, and the reason I will show my husband this article, is the part about emotional abuse: "Most of them have been victims of some kind of emotional abuse as children. That means having a parent who derides you, constantly criticizes you or calls you names."

After 9 years of recovery, I had never heard the childhood trauma of an SA referred to in that way. It was always about sexual trauma, which my husband never experienced. However, his father used to give him a look that as a child my husband interpreted as, "I wish you had never been born." And both of his parents are very critical, although they try to express it as a matter of love and concern. My husband, his sibling, and I all called his parents on their criticism in the same week a few years ago, since then they have tried to keep their comments to themselves a bit more. You can actually see them biting their tongues. It's a little funny now, even though I wish it could erase the effects on his self-esteem that they caused when he was small. =(

I'm glad that this is out there as well... The comments and remarks that I've heard and seen since Duchovny's announcement have been so disheartening - there is such ignorance out there about how serious and devastating this problem is.
